My cat has Feline Hyperesthesia...
My cat has Feline Hyperesthesia Syndrome. We have tried Gabapentin, which appeared to agitate her even more. She is now on .5 mg of Fluoxetine twice a day but still has these fits off and on all day. To us, she really appears to be in pain when she is yowling, switching her tail and hissing at her back end. Any new or better drugs on the market for this condition?

When addressing probable pain, my choice would be a narcotic such as buprenorphine. Gabapentin can be added to buprenorphine administration but rarely suffices to provide the type of analgesia we desire when used as a sole agent.

I have previously read this article and every other bit of information I can find. Can phenobarbitol be added along with the Fluoxetine?

It can be, yes. There's no adverse drug interaction recognized between the two. Please continue our conversation if you wish.

Hi Jody,
I'm just following up on our conversation about Joeann Guy-Escue. How is everything going?

Yesterday we picked up Buprenorphine at the vets. Will continue Fluoxetine along with the pain medication...I just want to see if she is in pain and this should tell me. I applied Frontline Tritac 2 days ago; I do believe her symptoms subside for a few days after application. Could there be something in the flea medication that helps her?

None of the ingredients in that product - fipronil, etofenprox, or methoprene - should address anything more than fleas and ticks and so if these ectoparasites were contributory to her hyperesthesia it could be helpful.

Thanks, ***** ***** thought there could be a connection. We do not have fleas but use it as a precaution (inside cats). When her symptoms first began, we did think it could be fleas.

You're welcome. I'll be offline between 01/28-02/08.
