Why is my cat sleeping most of the time?

Customer Question

I recently adopted a cat that the vet said is 6-8 years of age and seems to be part Maine Coon. She makes no other sound other than purring and she sleeps a lot, almost all the time. She doesn't seem lethargic just lazy.

Why is she sleeping most of the time?

Is she eating well drinking pooping and peeing?

A cat sleep around 16-20 hours per day. That is a lot of sleep!

I would judge her behavior on how she act when she is awake. Can you get her to play with you or with toys? Cats typically like the toys attached to a stick that you can dangle in their face.

Should could be older. Older cats have arthritis. This make them not want to move. especially if they are overweight. Look for other health indicators also. Is she eating, drinking, defecating and urinating? Is she losing weight? These are questions that would make you have to go to the vet.
