David, Max is going to need a hands-on exam by his vet at your earliest convenience. It's unclear if his ataxia ("drunken sailor") is due to overall weakness as might be seen with profound anemia or other metabolic disorders, vestibular (balance) disorders such as the idiopathic (unknown cause) vestibular disorder of cats, or a central nervous system (brain/spinal cord) disorder which might have an infectious or neoplastic etiology.

I would expect a thorough physical and neurologic exam including diagnostics in the form of blood and urine tests to be performed. Please keep him as quiet as possible tonight and make it easy for him to reach his food, water, and litterbox so he doesn't hurt himself stumbling toward these things. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
