The rapid breathing would be most likely secondary to heart disease. Hyperthyroid cats will often times have a heart murmur or heart enlargement. This can lead to eventual congestive heart failure and fluid accumulation in or around the lungs.

I would get chest x-rays to evaluate the heart size and lungs. From there, he may need to go on heart meds.
