My cat may have consumed some ant poison with the active

Customer Question

Hi, My cat may have consumed some ant poison with the active ingredient of Avermectin B1 at .01%
It seems like he couldn't have gotten much out of the container. What tipped us off though is for a moment he acted as if he was drunk. He acted that way for maybe a few minutes and now is acting completely normal.
What should I do?

Ian, it takes quite a bit of avermectin to intoxicate a cat. We dose cats with similar drugs when prescribed as a heartworm preventative or insecticide. Toxicity doesn't appear within minutes. The avermectins are neurotoxins which take 12-96 hours to cause symptoms. I wouldn't induce emesis or treat in any manner. "Watchful waiting" over the next 24 hours is most reasonable.
