Customer Question

6 yr. Old male, neutered. Yowling, tender abdominal area, no energy. Tries to use litter box, but can't. I'm thinking constipation, and if so, what can I do?

My primary concern is that Nedward isn't constipated but, instead, can't urinate. This is caused by a condition called idiopathic (unknown cause) cystitis - an inflammation of the bladder in which large amounts of mucus and grit are formed. When this material passes out with the urine, plugs of it obstruct the urethra and when a cat can't pass urine for as little as 36 hours, renal failure arises. Unless you can find large amounts of urine in his box, Nedward needs the attention of an on call/ER vet at your earliest convenience.
