Cat had large hairball Saturday night 11p.m. Continued with

Customer Question

cat had large hairball Saturday night 11p.m. Continued with trying to cough hairball during intervals for the past 2 days. non hairballs only sputum with frothy foam. Noted he had consumed possible parts of an airplane plant when he had initial hairball. Concerned, he upchucks every time he tries to eat. He was allowed some cat grass just now and he upchucked it with in 5 minutes of eating. Could he have a blockage instead of an unsettled stomach?

If vomiting OR trying to vomit especially immediately following eating anything, that is a very real concern for a possible foreign body that has been ingested. Considering that information and that it has persisted for 2 days this is definitely worth a vet visit and some belly x-rays to confirm if anything has been swalllowed.

Yes, a blockage is suspected. But, could still just be a bad gastritis. Well worth the vet visit since they can give some good medication to also help settle the stomach.

You can also give a 1/4 tablet of over-the-counter Pepcid A.C. 10mg antacid to help the stomach some.

Hope that information helps

Good Luck.

Hope everything works out okay.

Get in to a vet sooner if there is repeated vomiting, a tense or bloated belly, or any labored or open mouth breathing.

You indeed answered the question. We took the cat in and had x-rays and were told they were inconclusive as to if obstruction. Daughter remembered hairball remedy that we had used on a long hair cat. Tried the remedy and it worked like a charm.. within 20 minutes he was bathing and has since had no problems. Happy to report that. Christmas was great. Thanks
