Customer Question

My female, fixed cat is about 8 years old. She is very over weight. Tonight I saw that she had some blood coming from her rectum. She has also been losing patches of hair. What could be wrong?

Hello Helen,

My name is***** and I am here to help you.

Are you sure that the blood was coming from her rectum? Did you see it while she was having a bowel movement? Could she have been sitting on something and got up and left a reddish brown stain?

Does it look like she has any dried blood around her anus?

You are probably wondering why I am asking all these questions. I want to be as accurate as I can be for Sebastian's sake. I can't see her or examine her so my questions have to act as eyes for me.

It does look like dried blood. I just noticed it today. She also has a black film around her mouth sometimes. She also huffs sometimes like she is coughing.
Expert:  Dr Marta Lepes replied 1 year ago.

Ellen, there are a number of possibilities. What I'm worried about is the source of the possible blood.

With her being overweight it might be difficult for her to groom her anal area and the area can look black and dirty.

However there are instances of intestinal bleeding that can be very serious.

There is no easy fix that I can share with you.

I really recommend that you take her to your veterinarian. He/she can do a complete physical. Be prepared for some blood work. It sounds like Sebastian has multiple issues: possible intestinal bleeding, possible lung problems, skin issues. All of these together with being overweight can be quite serious.

I know that you want the best for your Sebastian. So do I.

Please take Sebastian to his doctor.

I wise you and Sebastian the very best.
