Customer Question

Two days ago I cleaned my cats ears with an ear cleaner with tea tree oil, and since that time, my cat can't walk straight, he falls down and his head bobbles. What is wrong and how can I help him?

While tea tree oil is toxic to cats it usually causes vomiting, diarrhea, central nervous system depression, and/or liver damage. It appears that Mo's ear cleaning has irritated his semicircular canals in his inner ear(s) (otitis interna). This isn't uncommon in cats and usually remisses unaided within a day or two. If it persists for more than 72 hours, Mo's vet can attempt to reduce the inflammation in Mo's ears by injecting Mo with a systemic corticosteroid such as prednisolone or dexamethasone.
