My daughters cat was just diagnosed with fatty liver

Customer Question

My daughters cat was just diagnosed with fatty liver disease, she's very worried and wants to try a suggestion made by someone to give her fluids via a port herself at home. Can this be done safely? Also, "Domino" has a reddish brown tears that have started weeping from both eyes, but more in her left eye. Any help would be great! Thank you

It can be, yes. Most vets will prefer that fluids be administered subcutaneously rather than intravenously at home. There's far less chance of problems developing when fluids are given by the subcutaneous route. To so so, a subcutaneous port can be installed in the skin over Domino's dorsal neck. Check with her vet to see if such a port is available for installation. Not all vets will offer it. The reddish brown tears are likely to represent a recrudescence (relapse without cure in between events) of the feline herpesvirus (FHV-1) due to the stress caused by fatty liver disease. In most cases such a recrudescence will abate within a few weeks and simple cleansing of the eyes with saline as needed will suffice. It would be prudent to have Domino's vet take a look at Domino's eyes, however, when Domino goes in for port installation. Eyes need to be examined up close and personal.
