I'm sorry to hear of this with Rudy. I would replace his prednisone with budesonide - an orally administered glucocorticoid with limited systemic glucocorticoid effects. Budesonide is particularly useful in treating IBD in animals that are intolerant of systemic steroids. The combination of budesonide and furosemide (Lasix) may suffice but it would be prudent to clarify further why Rudy's heart is enlarged and congestive heart failure has arisen. In most cases, cardiomyopathy (heart muscle disease) is present and a cardiac ultrasound (echocardiogram) is indicated to better understand how that disease might be addressed.

My current vet referred me to a specialists after this finding. I have not had further testing done. I want to keep Rudy healthy and as you can imagine have already spent a handful on vet bills, meds, etc. I would like to recommend this option without putting Rudy through further anguish. Do you ever work with local veterinarians?

You're welcome to share our conversation with Rudy's vet. I occasionally help friends in their practices when they need help. Please continue our conversation if you wish.

Thanks for your help. I am going to suggest this to my vet and see if we can try it.

You're quite welcome. I believe that your suggestion will be welcomed. I can't set a follow-up in this venue and so would appreciate your returning to our conversation with an update - even after rating - at a time of your choosing.

Thanks.. Quick expensive is Buesonide?

I'm sorry, I don't know how much Rudy's vet would charge you for budesonide. It might have to be compounded from human capsules into a dosage strength suitable for Rudy.
