Customer Question

I am thinking of purchasing an Oriental White cat with we think will have blue eyes or perhaps green. I have heard that white cats with blue eyes may become deaf. The kittens we are looking at now are only 1 month and do not appear to be deaf. What are the odds that this could happen and when would it become deaf.

Thanks for your question. I am a veterinarian and will do my best to help.

You are correct, blue eyed white cats are more at risk for deafness than other colors. Since it is genetic, these kittens are usually deaf from birth. If the kittens you are looking at can definitely hear, then it is unlikely they will turn deaf later in life.
