Customer Question

My cat has allergies and I took her for a steroid shot.. It has not worked and I took her back and got antibotic pills and steroid pills. She only took half and then started throwing up the rest. She is scratching the blood out of her right now. Can I give her a Benidril pill until I can get her back to the vet on Monday?

Hello & welcome, I am Dr. B, a licensed veterinarian and I would like to help you with your wee one today.

Poor Lily!

In regards ***** ***** question, absolutely. We can certainly give her Benadryl just now to try and relieve her severe irritation. In regards ***** ***** she can have up to 0.5 milligrams per pound of her body weight (so 2.5 mg if she were 5lbs, 5mg if she were 10lbs, etc). Be aware that since cats are quite small the children's liquid version is usually easiest to use (though it is quite bitter and can cause drooling/frothing.

Otherwise, you could try her with Cetirizine (5mg once daily) as this may be better tolerated. And further to this, do take care with her nausea. She may be best on a light diet (ie boiled chicken, white fish, or meat babyfood without garlic/onion) but if she keeps vomiting, then she may need a break from the steroids +/- anti-nausea treatment from a local vet.

Please take care,

Dr. B.
