Customer Question

I have an 8 yr old cat. for the last 3 days she has been making a little noise, almost like when a cat gags before they cough to get up a hairball. She is eating, drinking, using the litter box. She is not lethargic but she seems to not want to run as much. Well tonight I realized she can't meow. She made the motion but she can't make the sound.

I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. In the great majority of cases, a change in vocalization or loss of voice is due to laryngitis caused by the feline herpesvirus (FHV-1) or Bordetella bronchiseptica bacterial infection. Thankfully, treatment is rarely necessary because these infections are expected to remiss unaided within 7-21 days. As long as she continues to eat, drink, and eliminate normally, she doesn't need to see her vet.

Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
