Customer Question

My male 3 year old cat recently had an injury to his tail and needed sutures. His tail is healing slowly and looks like amputation may need to be implemented. Today, he's growling and hissing and licking his groin. There's a reddish discharge leaking.

I have macrobid 100mg available, can he take it if he has an infection?

I am sorry to hear about the tail. Yes, sometimes, these tail injuries do require amputation, which is okay, and can help expedite recovery time.

The reddish discharge and licking groin area could suggest a possible urinary tract infection, or quite commonly, idiopathic cystitis. That is a condition of a acute onset of inflammation inside of the bladder wall, which is often stress induced. It is quite painful and many cats will begin to strain to urinate.

Either way, I think you have a concurrent problem that will definitely require a recheck examination with any vet today for added supportive care. Additional pain medication like buprenorphine is very popular in this situation.

Good Luck!
