Customer Question

my 13 year male cat has renal failure, yet is in good spirits,,seems to have no pain, lost weight and is ready to eat all day. I feed him WERUVA low phosphorus canned food...and lately am adding a bit of FORTIFLORA....just a sprinkle.,,
He is not gaining any weight. He is alert, responsive, has a shiny coat.
He lately" steals" food from the other cat...regular food....and "laughs" at me when I scold him for doing this. :)
Is there anything else I should add to his diet????

Aloha! You're speaking with Dr. Michael Salkin
That kind of hunger most often indicates hyperthyroidism, diabetes mellitus, or both in a 13 year old cat. Both diseases cause polyphagia (increased hunger) yet weight loss. Diabetes always also causes polydipsia (increased thirst) and polyuria (increased volume of urine) while only 35% of hyperthyroid cats are polydipsic and polyuric.
Rather than feeding differently at this time, please have his fasted blood sugar and T4 (total thyroid blood test) performed. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
