My cat has been swishing his tail back and forth involuntarily

Customer Question

My cat has been swishing his tail back and forth involuntarily for days. He is 15 years old. He does this during waking and sleep time. What could be wrong?

Hello, I am sorry to hear you are worried about your cat. I am a veterinarian and will do my best to help. Is anything else different? Any change in appetite, water drinking, bowel movements? I would be looking for something painful in his tail, lower spine area. If he were mine, I would check his anal glands for impaction or infection, his lower spine for swelling or pain, and check to be sure he is not having diarrhea. Is he an indoor or an outdoor cat? If no painful area or infection can be found, this could be a form of partial or mini seizure. Let me know what else I can help with or answer.
