I have a very sick kitten outside that I cannot afford to take

Customer Question

I have a very sick kitten outside that I cannot afford to take to the vet. I have given him some antibiotics but I'm low. It seems to be helping. Is there a way to get more without a vet visit? Or anything else I can give him?

Hello. These infections in kittens are more often viral than bacterial. Antibiotics can help to treat secondary infections, but they don't have any anti-viral activity. To get more antibiotics, you would need to get them from a vet. A vet exam is required to script out meds. If you want to try something with some anti-viral activity, you could get Lysine. This can be purchased over the counter at most human pharmacies or vitamin stores. They're also available on line as powders or cat treats. You can give 250 mg to him twice daily. This should help combat any viral component. I hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions.
