Inflamed nipples/breasts at this stage would most likely indicate mastitis - a bacterial infection that has caused tissue destruction and death (necrosis) as evidenced by the color change to black. Susie's vet will need to examine Susie's breasts to see if a systemic antibiotic will suffice or, instead, surgical debridement of the devitalized tissue will be necessary before an antibiotic can be fully effective.
