Hi, Kizzy's owner!

I hope it's ok for me to answer you here,Chat doesn't seem to be working right.

Asthma is a very common problem in cats. Many cats live normal, full lives with it. However, any condition that compromises breathing can be a big deal, so it's good that you want to try and help him.

For some asthmatic cats an antihistamine, such as benadryl, 1/2 of a 25 mg tablet twice daily, can help. For many cats, though, more aggressive therapy is needed. Talk to your vet about inhalant albuterol or steroids. Inhaled steroids can be a wonderful, safe option for long term therapy, but are unfortunately cost prohibitive for many owners.

For many asthmatic cats, they are triggered by inhaled or surface (on the fur) irritants. So treating your household like you were living with an asthmatic child can help--ie, hepa filters, air cleaners, frequent vacuuming, etc--check out the americal lung association's web site for info on getting allergens out of the air. Fish oil supplements can also help in the long term. Frequent bathing, keeping the fur short, or wiping down with a clean, damp rag can reduce the number of allergens that cling to your cat's hair, and may help as well.

Hope this information helps.

I am a pensioner so I am hoping for a cure or remedy that I can cope with.for Kizzy, so can I buy this Benedryl from a pet shop? also she has a lot of matting in her coat but how ever much I brush and comb her I cant get it out, has this anything to do with the asthma?

To be clear, I can't explicitly recommend using medications in a patient I haven't examined. However, it is typically regular people, over-the-counter, 25 mg benadryl (diphenhydramine HCl) that is used, which can be bought at any drug store. Just make absolutely certain that diphenhydramine is the only active ingredient (ie acetominiohen, or paracetamol as its called in the UK, the active ingredient in Tylenol, is FATAL to cats)

Fish oil is also very safe, and available at the drug store. The capsules can be punctured with a pin and drizzled over the food daily to reduce allergic problems.

The matting is certainly not helping anything. Matted fur can harbor allergens, in addition to causing skin problems or discomfort. Perhaps a visit to the groomer a couple times a year would make a big difference for her!
