Is there something I can give feral cats like sleeping pills

Customer Question

Is there something I can give feral cats like sleeping pills to sedate them long enough for me to catch them and transport them. They come into our garage to eat our outdoor cats' foods and I can trap them in the garage and remove our cats. I figure I can feed the feral cats and get them sedated so I can gather them up. Is there something I can give them to put them to sleep/sedate them?

Welcome to JustAnswer! I am a licensed veterinarian and would be glad to help!

For what you list, options may include:

Over the counter, the most effective and safe option would be benadryl. The dose will be 1mg for every 1 pound of body weight. For example, a 15 pound cat can receive 15mg of benadryl.

There are other options as well that are prescription such as acepromazine, butorphanol or valium, that may provide more effective sedation, but are not over the counter products and should be prescribed by your veterinarian.

I hope this information helps.

Will it put the cats to sleep or just make them mellow?

The benadryl will make them mellow. Depending on the dose of the other medications - they can range from making them mellow to more sedative properties.
