Japanese Bobtail: little bit of reddish fluid..veterinarian..bleeding…

Good Morning, I noticed this evening...
Good Morning,

I noticed this evening a dark crusty discharge in my 17 year old Japanese Bobtail's eyes. After wiping her eyes the tissue seemed to have a little bit of reddish fluid on it. Since it is late here in SC and I do not want to wake her veterinarian up, I was wondering if she could be bleeding from her eyes. She does not seem, to be in pain/discomfort. As for her general health, she is on Denamarin which I believe has no side effects, and she alsoreceived radiation treatment for thyroid cancer two years ago. I am loooking forward to your answer.

Hello Ula,

Is the entire eye red or just the whites of the eyes and the discharge?
Is she squinting the eyes?
Any swelling of the eyelids?

Dr. Gary, no only the discharge is crusty and reddish. Her eyes/whites of her eyes are not red. She is not squinting and there is no swelling of the eyelids. Could she have an eye infection?
Ok thanks,

This is strange- usually the cause is going to be conjunctivitis, corneal ulcers, inflammation behind the cornea or glaucoma. With any of these, they should have red irritated eyes.

If just the discharge is red, then it may still be an eye infection/ inflammatory problem but less mild than expected.

I would just wipe the discharge and then use a rewetting drop or saline solution in the eye every 4-6 hours until you can get the eyes evaluated by your vet Monday morning/ afternoon.

If the eyes are back to normal in the morning, then don't worry about going, but if any discharge, pain or swelling then I'd get her looked at.

I hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions.

Thank you very much for your help. I will do as you suggested and I will also take the old lady to the veterinarian in the morning. Given her age and dislike of the vet's office she'll be in a bad mood all day (smile). Have a good night/morning.

Ula

You're very welcome, good luck with her- it sounds like you're doing a great job so far with a 17 year old cat!
