It is not necessary to feed your older cat K/D. It is important to get extra fluids into her to support her kidneys and help flush out waste products that her kidneys don't filter very well anymore.

You can leave your feed set up the way you have it with the foods you are using. If you could supplement the older cat with canned foods, strained meat baby foods, or any other moist food she like that you can add water to make a broth or gravy for her to drink off. This will do more than any kidney diet.

Remember, it is much more important that she eat than it is that she eat a special diet.

Follow this link for a complete discussion about treating kidney disease. If you would like to maintain the quality of her life for as long as you can, you might consider starting sub Q fluid injections now. It will make a world of difference in how long her aged kidneys do well.

how about higher line food like i asked re. iams proactive plus coud you more specific on baby foods its almost impossible to seperate their feddings @ if we did use the k/d is it harmful to the young cats
Cat Veterinarian: Doctor 4 Cats, Cat Veterinarian replied 8 years ago

Any of the commercially available foods are ok for all the cats (Purina, Iams, Hills, Whiskas, Waltham, etc). They are ok and not harmful to the older cat with kidney disease.

My points are:

Fluid intake (water) is more important than what food she eats.

It is more important that she eat than what she eats. Many cats deteriorate because they are put on kidney diets that they don't like and refuse to eat. Unlike dogs, cats will not get hungry enough to eat something they don't like. They will waste away and die first.

Any of the strained meat baby foods (chicken, turkey, beef) are very palatable and the older cat should eat it right down. Just put her somewhere alone for 5 minutes when you can and give her some soupy canned food.

The K/D is not harmful to the other cats. The higher end foods such as iams would be better. Any Iams. Beechnut, Gerber, or any other babyfood. I don't know how to be more specific.
