Customer Question
I rescued 2 baby kittens...
I rescued 2 baby kittens assumed to be 3 weeks old; vet said no diseases, just ear mites, fleas, etc.; being treated; I'm keeping warm, feed Kitten Milk Replacer, Stage 1 baby food, pedialyte; one kitten is responding well: alert, playing a little; the other kitten is still weak, taking milk and pedialyte but now fights when I feed him; in the beginning he responded to touch, now rejects it; Question...is this an indication he won't make it and "knows" it? Also, what temperature should they be kept in? Inside my home (72 degrees), wrapped up? In the garage, well ventilated but with Texas heat..95 degrees daytime; 80 degrees @ night. Weaker kitten seems to be perspiring while in garage. Thank you so much for your help!

HI there

The garage is way too hot for these babies-they should be kept in your house in a box with a covered heat pad on one side. That way if they feel too warm they can crawl to the other side of the box. The weaker kitten may need subQ fluids for a few days to perk him up -your vet can teach you how to do this. Be sure to feed every 4 hours. I would not give the babay food-the milk replacer is better! When they are 5 weeks you can start offering canned kitten food, by 6 weeks they should be eating great on their own. Make sure all the fleas are off as they can cause anemia causing weakness-make sure their gums are pink! I would also ask your vet for a "kitty vitamin" for the weak baby. A round of antibiotics may not be a bad idea just to cover. Make sure the vet dewormed them as well-they should be dewormed every 2 weeks until they are 4 months old. Dr. Jenn
