cat: He hides under the bed the rug whatever...stay in my lap…

Customer Question
I have a cat that...
I have a cat that went from normal to freaked out in a second. He hides under the bed the rug whatever. He's not eating; to get him to eat I have to hold him and the food and force him to stay in my lap. He acts hungry, but will stop after a bite and tense up. He starts growling and will run if I don't hold him. He's been like this for about 2 weeks. It just seemed to happen out of nowhere.

Hi,
Welcome to Just Answer. Is Lefty loosing any weight? Is he vomiting or having diarrhea? Is he drinking water normally?

He is loosing weight because he's not eating. He doesn't drink water, but he will take skim milk on occassion. He hasn't been vomiting or having diarrhea that I have noticed.

The loosing weight isn't helped by his not eating. But, he is most likely not eating because of some underlying medical reason. I would say that at this point in time, the things I'm worried about are as follows.

1) Hyperthyroidism

2) Diabetes
http://www.VeterinaryPartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=631

3) Chronic renal disease
http://www.VeterinaryPartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&C=&A=2633&SourceID=

4) Intestinal foreign body

Of these, the first 3 can be screened for with blood work and a urine evaluation that your vet can run. The foreign body is one that may be palpated, seen on an xray or with other diagnostics. I would recommend getting your little one examined by your vet to see what they can find out and what they can do to help the situation out. We don't want him to loose more weight as they can start to have fat build in their liver and this will make them even sicker.

I hope this helps,

Dr. Bruce

It's his behavior that is really odd. He's always been a confident cat, but now he's always hiding or clinging to me. He acts like he's scared of something.
Cat Veterinarian: Dr. Bruce, Veterinarian replied 8 years ago
He could be acting this way because he's actually feeling painful, weak, or in general under the weather. When he's feeling good, he's confident. When he's not feeling well, he's letting his behavior show that his body is stressed.
