Hi and Welcome to Just Answer!

This is usually due to a hair ball or something indigestible or noxious he has eaten. If he is an outdoor cat and a hunter it could be anything from a lizard to frog etc. Commonly though it is due to grooming and swallowing hair and then coughing up a hairball.

You can offer him a teaspoon of petroleum jelly (vaseline) --- many cats will eat this right off of your finger. This works as a lubricant and can help move the hairball.

If this behavior continues, see your vet. Whitby may need more definitive treatment but usually the hair ball passes or is puked up.
