My cat is an 11 yr old long haired cat. He has been vomiting, maybe about 3 times per week. He acts like he feels ok. He still eats and is affectionate and purrs alot. The vomit looks like mostly digested food, sometimes there is hair but not like a hairball. Any idea about what could be wrong ?

Hello,

Well, a few concerns.

First, my general list:

My primary concerns for vomiting include:

- Dietary indiscretion (eating something you do not know about)

- Stomach or intestinal foreign body

- Something that was given to them (new dog food, new treat, human food)

- Intestinal parasitism (not just the worms, but the microscopic bugs like Giardia and Coccidia). They can cause vomiting also, not just diarrhea

- Toxin exposure would be less likely, unless you have reason to suspect exposure to a chemical.

- Less commonly, endocrine disease like Addison's (where the body produces insufficient steroids from the adrenal glands)

- Generally, in older pets, I am also concerned about organ disease or failure (liver, kidneys) and cancer.

Now, at 11 years of age, I definitely think a bit more about organ problems (liver, kidney), cancer, inflammatory bowel disease (Yes, not necessarily diarrhea but vomiting in cats), and I am even suspicious that the hartz hairball remedy itself could be causing some digestive upset.

3 times a week is to often. I get worried about that much vomiting causing a chronic gastritis (with the stomach acids leading to ulcerated stomach wall and hurting the esophagus).

So, absolutely, he needs some basic testing performed and supportive care to get this figured out.

Good LUck

I had been giving Simon a can of tuna once a week for quite awhile. I stopped that 2 weeks ago. Do you think that could have something to do with his vomiting ?
Cat Veterinarian: Dr. Andy, Medical Director replied 8 years ago

Not likely.

Certainly, if you stopped the tuna and it was cause of the vomiting, the vomiting should have subsided completely.

You can always try ruling-out a food allergy issues if the vomiting has been going on for months.

I love the prescription food by science diet called D/D green pea.

P.S.

To help settle the stomach when vomiting does occur, you can always give a 1/4 tablet of a over-the-counter 10mg (regular strength) Pepcid A.C.

I hope that is a satisfactory answer.
