Customer Question
My Kitty seems fine....
My Kitty seems fine. He is about 12 years old. He eats well, drinks well, he maintains his coat and is playful but he is losing weight. I changed his food a few months ago from Iams Hairball control to a holistic one. But very recently his feces shrunk. Usually it looks like tootsie rolls. Lately though it looks like about half the size, like my pinkie finger. I thought maybe he was having a hard time digesting dry food so I switched him to a wet food. His bowels seem more normal but I am worried he will still lose weight.

It is good that you switched him to wet food for many reasons. Although not perfect, wet food more closely resembles the natural diet of the cat, higher moisture, higher protein, less cereal grain carbohydrates. If you can increase the amount of food your cat is eating you should try to do so. Being 70% water, wet food is lower in calories than dry food by volume.

At 12 years old your cat should have blood work to check for internal organ disease. Commonly diabetes and over active thyroid will cause the cat to eat well, but lose weight in spite of it. It would be a good screen at his age. Also a urinalysis to check for age related changes in the kidneys.
