can cats take diphenhydramine HCL (25mg) with phenylephrine

Resolved Question:

can cats take diphenhydramine HCL (25mg) with phenylephrine (10mg)? we give our dog 1/2 of a tablet and the cat got the 1/2 instead. Our cat weights approx. 20lbs.

Neither dogs nor cats should be given phenylephrine. Plain diphenhydramine (Benadryl) is relatively safe, but phenylephrine can cause some serious side effects in both species (depending on the dose). Oral absorption is low, but there may be enough here to cause problems. Arrhythmias (irregular heart beats), high blood pressure, and hyperexcitability are all potential side effects. I cannot find the toxic dose of this drug in dogs or cats, but you may find the information you need by contacting the ASPCA poison control center. They charge $60 per call.
