Hello:
I am a comedian based in the DC-Baltimore area. I would like to begin to shop myself to colleges and universities. I recently was able to book myself at a UVA event, but that was just using one tool. How do comedians book themselves? Who is the contact? When is the best time to do so? How do you discuss their need? Express your uniqueness?

Thanks,

Mike
Good to hear that you have found some gigs to work but I am sure it is difficult as there are many like yourself trying to find work at various events etc.

The New York Times ran a story last year on salaries of comedians but in this article, you may find ideas from others in this field on how to book events:

Recommendations I could offer are having a website tailored to showcase your talents (maybe a short video on the site with parts of your act). Also having information on sites such as facebook, linkedin as well as a current twitter feed. These sites are viewed by event planners who can see your act and then contact you for future work.

Comedians in the DC area are using services such as gigmasters but others such as:

Overall, reviewing booking agents in the D.C. area is in many ways are how comedians are finding work in this crowded field.
