Character references can make or break your chances at getting a job, particularly when you have little work experience. Friends can be a great source of positive references, but keep in mind that the most credible people to provide references are community leaders, teachers, people you may have done volunteer work or chores for, etc.

Some key questions to ask a character reference are:

How long have you known the person?
In what capacity have you known him/her?
Would you consider this person dependable (on time) and a hard worker and can you give an example to support your view?
Can you tell me about his/her strongest character traits with examples please?
Can you tell me what is his/her worst trait with an example please?
Do you think he/she would be qualified to _______ (describe the position you are filling)?
