Customer Question

Pulmonolgists. I have been in treatment for copd cause unknown . I don smoke and I quit in 1980. I am 72 now. I use advair 250/ 0r 500 50 depending on how well I can afford co pay. A friend has a lot of the 500 50's. My md likes 250's. I keep track of my breathing by pulmonary function test , seeing a lung specialist, having chest x ray yearly. . What can I do else besides loose weight which I need to accomplish, 239 at 6ft male. The md says I am not expelling the gasses like one does without copd. What else can I do to retard the progression so copd hold off as long as possible

Hello ,I am Dr. Aren and i will help with your query. The COPD is probably secondary to your earlier smoking and exposure to other pollutants later. You can see a physiotherapist who can teach you breathing exercises to increase your lung function and gaseous exchange, exercise regularly, eat healthy ,take a low salt diet and avoid dust/smoke/ pet dander/atmospheric allergens and avoid tobacco in any form.Regular breathing exercises and long walks will definitely help.

Do you know of a medication taken by mouth that increases lung function?
Expert:  Vakul Aren replied 7 months ago.

Youi are already on a beta agonist and inhaled steroids, left are Ipratromium/tiotropium( inhaled anticholinergics ) as inhaled drugs which can be added to increase lung function for COPD.Oral bedtime Theo[phylline/deriphyllin is a second line drug if needed to avoid night time bronchospasm. Addition of an ACE inhibitor or ARB can help with the preload and act as an aid.
