Amiodarone does have many potentially very bad side-effects, but Tambocor usually is well-tolerated, and unless there are other heart problems (besides the AFib), usually they are not serious.

Unfortunately, amiodarone is the only really effective medication for AFib. Tambocor helps a lot of people, but not all, and patients can stop responding to it.

This is a good summary of the management of AFib from the Mayo Clinic: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/atrial-fibrillation/ds00291/dsection=treatments-and-drugs. I recommend looking at ablation, which has the potential of actually curing AFib in some patients (but not without some risk).

If you are not already on an anticoagulant (often called a "blood thinner," although it does not actually thin the blood in any way), you may want to check your risk of having a stroke at: http://www.mdcalc.com/chads2-score-for-atrial-fibrillation-stroke-risk/. If your score on this calculator is 2 or higher, most doctors would recommend warfarin, Pradaxa or a similar drug.
