We're considering purchasing a vintage XJ6L (1976) and are inquiring about any issues (mechanical, fuel, etc,) that have historically plagued this car. Information, please?

Mechanic's Assistant: Has the vehicle turned into a gas hog? And how does it start -- same as usual?

Seems to start as usual, particularly in this very cold weather. It would be our 'regular' car (has 45,000 miles), good fit and finish, undercarriage clean and solid.

Mechanic's Assistant: What year is your XJ6L?

If we purchase it, is is a 1976.

Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your XJ6L yourself? What have you tried so far?

Don't have any problems with it now (we've test driven it), so are wondering if there are any historic issues with this model and this year.

Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

No, and I appreciate your connecting us with a mechanic,

Hello. Welcome to Just Answer. Please allow me to assist you. We have had several XJ6s come thru the shop over the years. Mechanically, they are pretty decent cars, but, they are not trouble free. We see quite a bit of power steering leaking on the last few. There is the ongoing problem of exhaust replacement due to rust. The most offending component under the bonnet is the ignition amplifier. The amps are Lucas...Expensive and prone to fail. If your vehicle has 'auto' climate control, the cam and carriage motor is known to quit; replacing it is very difficult. Make sure you check under the engine at the rear main seal area. Hope this helps.
