I just bought a 2011 DTS. The owner has used only regular gas. What happens if I upgrade to premium and he only used 10/30engine oil what happens to the engine if I upgrade to the specs in the manuel?

Mechanic's Assistant: Has the vehicle turned into a gas hog? And how does it start -- same as usual?

Starts fine no knocking but I don't floor the engine

Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your DTS yourself? What have you tried so far?

Just bought it. wanting to know what happens to the northstar engine if I upgrade fuel and oil

Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

No thank you

Hello. Welcome to Just Answer. Please allow me to assist you. Nothing "happens" when you move up in octane rating. Some engines are designed to run on premium fuel (octane 93 or 94). It is best to use premium fuel IF the owner's manual recommends it.

If the engine is NOT designed for premium fuel, usage of high octane fuel is a waste of money. If the engine is not designed for that fuel, the benefits of premium fuel is lost.

it's a 2011 Northstar

Regarding oil, almost all of the newer (2010 and up) engines require synthetic oil. This is necessary as synthetic oil is very stable when used as a pressure function. ALl variable valve timing applications use engine oil pressure to operate the valve timing. Traditional oil does not respond as rapidly as synthetic.
