Exhaust is way too hot coming out of exhaust pipe, 80,000

Customer Question

exhaust is way too hot coming out of exhaust pipe
JA: How many miles are on the car? How has your mileage been lately?
Customer: 80,000 miles, just got it running again, had not run for about 2 years.
JA: Are you fixing your 80 yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: trying right now, it is an '85 Mustang, replaced catalytic converter with straight pipe.
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: exhaust seems to be flowing well. It is reving quite high, makes me think it could be timing.

if your timing is too advanced it will cause the exhaust to heat up more. as well as a lean fuel mixture can cause this too.
