That does seem pretty premature, however the brakes on the 500 tend to have a shorter lifespan than normal. It seems to be fairly common to have them replaced around the 20k mile mark, but driving habits and road conditions can make them wear out a little sooner or later than normal. what seems to happen is the brake pads tend to drag when the brake pedal is released causing premature wear on the pads.
