I have a 1999 Hyuiandi Accent. My check engine light flashes

Customer Question

I have a 1999 Hyuiandi Accent. My check engine light flashes intermittently. I have no power almost going up hill or even slight hill. I know my transmission is slipping (found out several years ago but was told since car so old just drive it until cant anymore...not worth repair cost But it drove pretty normal except no uphill power when air condition was on, until recently). It all began last week when on highway, it overheated, but after checking antifreeze & oil...it was ok level. Pretty much I can drive low speed (35-40 mph or less) & it wont overheat. So cant be thermostat. Makes a odd sound, like engine old. I took it to my mechanic, he says try Tune up...if works ok but if not probably engine & just drive it until dead. ANY better advice???

or...should I just drive it until it dies as he suggested?

Hello, my name is***** check engine light flashing means engine is misfiring which is usually caused by a failing ignition coil. Does it ever overheat at idle?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
It does not overheat at idle. It overheated when I was on the highway going fast but since then it does not. Also, I thought it might be fuel filter issue b/c I haven't been able to put gas in my tank normally (slow fill) since winter which means fuel filter clogged or worst fuel tank.

Cant I just have the check engine code read for free at Auto part store & it verify ignition coil?

If you have codes checked at parts store it might indicate what cylinder is misfiring, then you will want to check spark on that cylinder, if spark is weak replace coil. The problem with filling fuel tank is usually caused by a clogged charcoal canister. So as of now I'd start by checking diagnostic codes and deal with misfire since misfire may be causing vehicle to overheat. Let me know if you have more questions or what codes you end up getting. Thanks.
