screeching noise when driving car seems to come from drivers front wheel . When i apply brakes noise stops then comes back on.

This the sensor on the brake pads thats letting you know the pads are wearing down .When were the brakes replaced last?

had service on car 3 months ago mechanic did not indicate that pads were worn . mot last june

Ok Im sure he did not check the inner brake pad thats were the wear sensor is.From your description this is the exact issue.So this needs to be checked next .The other issue can be there is debris stuck between the brake rotor and backing plate.These are what need to be checked next for this issue not a major issue.The last item it can be is the caliper is starting to seize.These are the next steps.Hoped this helped.Please rate excellent service so I get credit for my help thanks.Bonuses greatly appreciated.
