I still have the same problem with this 2002 Land Rover Freelander. It has a JF506E auto transmission. When you shift down to 1 st gear on the selector the car acts like its in park. It will not move, but its in gear, engine is not freewheeling. Its in first and park at the same time. Put the selector in second and it will move freely no problems. If you put the selector in drive it will move freely but all of a sudden slam to a stop like it went into park. Needless to say I do not like driving it to test it. I asked this question before. The answer was not correct. My feeling is that it is the shift selector sensor. I need an expert to tell me if this is right. Thank you.

What does the truck do if you put it in neutral? Will it move?

Customer reply replied 7 years ago
Hello, In neutral it doesn't move and the engine revs freely. The car moves freely in neutral when pushed. It acts normal in all gears except Park and 1st.
Auto Mechanic: Ted G., ASE Certified Technician replied 7 years ago
It sounds like you have a pressure leak in the transmission (most likely at the valve body) that is causing the second gear clutch to be activated whenever the trans is shifted to forward gear. I don't think it is going into park since that is a mechanical lock, requiring the shifter to be moved. But if the second clutch pack is always engaged then it will lock against 1st and 3rd so when the trans tries to shift it locks up in two gears. Regardless of how the leak is occurring you will need the transmission taken apart for inspection and rebuild/repair.

I am a mechanic. Can the valve body be removed with the trans in the car? I will take it apart and clean and inspect it, and install new gaskets.
Auto Mechanic: Ted G., ASE Certified Technician replied 7 years ago
Yes, it's tight but it will come out. I would probably replace the 2nd solenoid too if I didn't see anything else wrong in there.
