1990 GMC: travel trailer..one pull in drive or overdrive

We have a 1990 GMC 1500 and would like to pull a travel trailer - 24ft - what is the maximum safe weight as to not put a strain on the transmission, etc. and should one pull in drive or overdrive

A reasonable tow capacity for that truck is about 7500 pounds. You should not tow in od but a lot of people do and you can if you are careful and only put it in od once you are up to cruising speed.
