Hello unless the engine is overheating it won't affect the idling.
Unless of course there is coolant spraying onto the ignition system.
The core plug change can be really seen best on youtube - there are some great videos on it.
However here goes.
You will need a hammer and a drift.
Drain the radiator into a bucket and dispose of the coolant in an environmentally friendly way.
Identify the leaking freeze plug ( i usually like to replace all of them)
Knock the freeze plug on the inside edge so it twists into the inside cavity. The plug will turn and you can lever it out or pull it out with pliers.
Coat the new plug with a sealant like shellac and knock it into place with a large socket inside it. Use care to make sure you get the plug perfectly straight into the block.
Reconnect and refil the cooling system making sure you add plenty of anti corrosion / anti freeze.
