91 Town Car: electrical system..lights dim..lights remain steady

Customer Question

My 91 Town Car electrical system modulates. During operation the lights dim and brighten. When putting a maximum electrical load on the car the lights remain steady. There has been several alternator failures over the passed years. Replacing the alternator does not fix the problem it only fixes the charging system until the next alternator failure. The alternators last about a years or so. Any ideas?

Hello there!

Did you still need help?

Are you saying that the lights get dim and go bright when a load is put on the charging system?

Is this just the headlights or is this the entire vehicle that does this?

Customer: replied 7 years ago.
All lights

Have you checked for excessive AC voltage when all of the electrical loads are on?
Customer: replied 7 years ago.
The electrical system is stable with max loads (lights do not change) I have not checked the voltage under this condition.

SO now you are saying hat the lights are stable?

What seems to be the concern?

Customer: replied 7 years ago.
No. I have contected a volt meter to the battery and have observed the following:

Note: All readings at engine idle.

1. Before start battery votage 12.5
2. Engine running lights, A/C, radio on, Voltage fluxuates from 14.5 to 15.5 volts
3. Same conditon as #2 with brakes applied voltage is 14.5 and stable.

So what is your concern?

From what you are telling me, everything is just fine.

Customer: replied 7 years ago.
I do not except this answer because of the following:

I have replaced the alternator several times. I have had other town cars thatn do not do this and dicussed this with other mechanics and have been told that this is not normal. How do I recieve a refund?
