tapping sound under valve covers..which cylinder..lifter

i have a 03 mach 1 witch has a tapping sound under valve covers, before i take it apart is there a way to narrow down as to which cylinder has a bad lifter or valve spring?

Hello JACUSTOMER, once the valve covers are off then you need to inspect each of the lifters for discoloration or signs of wear or pitting. If they are all fine then rotate the engine by hand one cylinder at a time to where the lifter is on the flat part of the cam and check for excessive clearance. Any looseness indicates worn parts.

do i need to pull cams off to repair springs or lifters

No, these can be replaced with the cams in place. It does make it easier with a Ford tool to hold the valve spring.
