1987 chevrolet: timing down to 20 degrees..ecm..ignition module..chain…

have a 1987 chebrolet r-20...
have a 1987 chebrolet r-20 truck with 5.7 liter in it
i have been unable to set timing
the vehicle will start @ 43 degress and i have been able to turn the timing down to 20 degrees , but then it dies
the vehicle will only start @ 43 degrees
checked for vacuum leaks - none
changed the ecm - no change
changed the ignition module - no change
timing chain has not slipped a tooth

pulling my hair out
don't know where else to go
please help

WHEN I PLUG THE CONNECT TOGETHER IT WILL NOT RUN
