1999 Mazda 626: V..6 check engine light came..code reader

Resolved Question:

My 1999 Mazda 626 V-6 check engine light came on and the code downloaded was 1131. The code reader also said it was a manufacturer's controlled setting. What is happening?

P1131 is pointing at lack of operation of the Heated Oxygen Sensor Bank1 Sensor1. More than likely the heater circuit in the sensor has gone bad. This heater is used to get the sensor to "normal" operating condition in just a matter of seconds. The reason it comes up as "Manufactur's Controlled System" is because every manufactuerer can instill their own personal codes into the OBD system to more easily and quickly remedy thier most common problems. Replacing the oxygen sensor Bank1 Sensor1 should solve your problem. It is located in the top of the exhaust pipe (before the cat) closest to the firewall.

I have the shop manual for the vehicle. The manual shows oxygen sensors within a few inches from where the exhaust pipes come off the bottom of each side of the engine. Then there is a sensor in front of the converter and one at the rear of the converter. Are you saying to replace the sensor in front of the converter?

Correct, the front of the converter.
