Customer Question

1997 Plymouth Breeze, 2.0 L        Intermediate problem...all lights go dim, battery warning light comes on, power steering fails,     Cars warms up and things start working again or there is a high reving noise and stuff starts working again.   Does not do this all the time.   Sometimes from a cold start and sometimes going down the road.

Thanks for choosing JustAnswer.
My name is Vladimir.
It sounds that you have a problem with the drive belts ( alternator and power steering ). They might be worn or slack.
You should have the belts inspected.

I tighten both the power steering belt and serpentine belt. Power steering needed it. I am not sure the serpentine did. It was replaced a few months ago so perhaps it stretched a little.

One question: As a general rule...does an alternator fail completely when they fail or can they work intermintally?

Expert:  Vladgmru replied 8 years ago.
If we are talking about an alternator itself, it usually fails completely, but sometimes a bad electrical contact inside an alternator can cause an intermittent operation. I would say 90% fail completely and 10% work intermittently.
You should also verify that the +12v output cable from the alternator has a clean terminal and it is tight.
