Year, make, and model please? And have you replaced any parts to fix this recently? Any other work done recently?

1999 mercury mountaineer 6 cylander. replaced air filter, in may changed serp belt

Do you have a check engine light on? Will it stay running if you keep your foot on the gas a little?

no check engine light on. if you keep your foot on hte gas and a foot on hte brake, it will stay running

no light on. battery and serp belt changed in may 2008

A very common failure on that engine is the idle air control. They begin to stick and will not allow enough air in to keep the engine idling properly. It is mounted to the throttle body and not very expensive to replace. About $100 and half and hour labor.graphic
