happen--- on a sliding or floating properly..rotor

i really need to know if i put the bolts in the wrong spot what would happen--- on a sliding or floating caliper the two bolts one has 3 notches on the end and the other one has 2 notches on the end which one goes on the bottom and which one goes on the top. if i did get them confused and put in the wrong spot would it work properly or would it cause damage to the rotor. help very confused female here

They are both different sizes correct?

If not, it should not matter where they go.
