1997 Cadillac: oil pressure flickers..Goes off when driving.

This answer was rated:

My 1997 Cadillac oil pressure flickers sometimes when I am stopped and car is just idoling. Goes off when driving. What could this mean.

What model is your car and engine size?

Customer: replied 8 years ago.
It is a cadillac deville and has the windstar engine

There is a few things that can cause this symptom. First make sure oil level is correct. Then check the oil pressure switch to see if there is any signs of oil leaking by it. You should also pull the switch and check with a manual guage.

Minimum Pressure at Normal Operating Temperature

At Idle 35 kPa (5 psi)
At 2000 RPM 250 kPa (35 psi)

The oil pressure screen could be clogged. Excessive engine wear could cause this problem. These are not likely it because these would be constantly low pressure. The oil sending unit is the most common.

Good luck.

you said the oil sending unit is the most common. Can you explain what this is.

This screws into the engine block and measures the oil pressure. If it goes bad or leaks, it could give the wrong reading.
